A Fond Farewell

Dear families,

As you will know, tomorrow is my last day at Abbeyhill as I am embarking on new adventures as Depute Head at the Royal High Primary in January, so I wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you.  I have been at Abbeyhill for a long time and have known some of you now for over a decade!  We have such a diverse range of families here at Abbeyhill which makes our school community such a special one and throughout all of my years here, I have always felt valued and supported by you all.  I am of course, excited about the next chapter, but will miss the children and families here tremendously and Abbeyhill will always have a very special place in my heart.  Thank you for helping to make my time here so special.

All in a day’s work!

A huge thank you to all of the Primary 6 pupils (plus Madzia and Chloe from P7!), parents, and staff who came along at this busy time of year to help at our stall at Stockbridge Market this afternoon.  The Handmade Wreaths and Christmas Crafts were such a hit that we completely sold out and raised £500 for our Lagganlia Fund.  Well done everyone – what a fantastic effort!

Stockbridge Market – Sunday 4th December

Primary 6 have been working flat out this week to get ready for our stall at Stockbridge Market this Sunday.  The class will be selling handmade Christmas Wreaths, lavender and cinnamon bags and little Christmassy boxes filled with shortbread biscuits – perfect for stocking fillers.  All of the money raised will go into the class Lagganlia Fund, to help towards the cost of school camp.  Please come along and support the class at Stockbridge market on Sunday – between 10am and 4pm.   A huge thank you to Donna for organising the stall for us and to Narcissus Flower School for donating all of the wreath making materials and offering some of the pupils a masterclass.   A very special thank you also to Mrs Black and Mrs Tansey, who are now wreath making experts – we couldn’t have done it without your help this week getting everything ready!

The P6 Literature Circle Journey Begins!

Primary 6 started Literature Circles a few weeks ago and are already acting like Literature Circle professionals! They have learned the first 4 Literature Circle Jobs of Summariser, Illustrator, Word Wizard and Question Writer and prepare for their Literature Circle meeting each week by completing the set section of their reading book and preparing their job to present to their group.  The class are already coming up with fantastically creative ways to present their jobs and are having some very interesting discussions about their group reading books.

Apache Relay Race

Primary 6 ended their “School of Dreams” project with the “Apache Relay” this week.  Over the last few weeks, we have been learning about people from all walks of life who had big dreams and worked hard to make these a reality.  We have been working collaboratively in teams to think about our own dreams and goals, and some of the attributes, like determination and perseverance, that we all need to achieve our dreams.  We have completed a series of tasks and through the process have learnt that “success is 99% failure” and that when things go wrong we can use that and learn from it, as an important part of the journey to success. Our learning culminated in the battle to end all battles between the teams – the Apache Relay.  To complete the relay, each team had to reflect on the different skills each individual member brings to the team and then use these different skills to assign different tasks in the relay to different group members.  Some tasks were number based (sudoku puzzles), some needed fast letter recognition skills (wordsearches), some required good visual awareness (drawing challenges, jigsaws), whereas others relied on a good memory (matching games), and others needed good fine and gross motor skills or physical fitness (lacing a shoe, juggling, press-ups).  For the final task, team members had to work together to build a lego model without seeing a picture or diagram, relying only on their team mates to relay instructions for what to do.  We had a huge amount of fun, and also learned that we are all good at different things, bringing different skills and qualities to the team, and that when we work together and utilise all these different skills, we can achieve even more.
