As we introduce and develop our Immersive Learning Environment, we are moving away from set topics and towards a more child centred approach. We will continue to have key focuses such as the use of a story for learning experiences or have a specific topic focus for a few days, but these will be directed from the questions and investigations the children have.
Percy the Park Keeper
This term we will explore our Literacy, Expressive Arts and Health & Well Being learning through the Percy the Park Keeper Stories. Within these stories we have the opportunity to explore the job roles associated with parklands, which we will be finding out more about during Woodland Wednesdays. We will use the stories to begin discussing characters, looking for information in pictures, predicting and sharing our thoughts and feelings. We will recreate the story and the characters and begin to sequence events.
Maths & Numeracy
We are beginning to explore and develop our knowledge of numbers 1-20. We will be looking at counting forwards and backwards, continuing a sequence of numbers and developing our confidence talking about numbers. We will discover how to use the numicon (a maths resource used to support learning) to help our understanding.
We will take our Maths learning outside and develop our learning in pattern and relationship within our natural environment.
A letter has gone home with more information regarding Woodland Wednesdays. This is an opportunity for the class to develop many skills, enhance learning and develop a strong understanding of their environment. We will initially begin by exploring the environment and setting expectations, we will also work on our maths and literacy learning.
Gym will take place on a Monday. Because of our topic, depending on the weather, we may make use of the playground. Please ensure kit is labelled clearly and in separate bag from their school bag. PE kits are to be kept in school all week.
Art is a time for experiencing different textures and can get messy. If you would like to give your children a painting pinny or t-shirt please make sure this is clearly labelled and it will be kept in their tray. Art in primary 1 is carried out throughout the week.
Home learning (phonic/sound work and reading) will start after the October break. Over the next couple of weeks a few phonic and sound items may come home, but these will be a resource to use and stay at home and not to be handed in for marking. In the meantime, take a few moments to talk to your child about their school day, what they enjoyed and why or what they might change when they come back into school.
I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at Meet The Teacher.
